Despite only being formed at the beginning of 2009, New Egham Singers (a member of Egham and District Choral Society) has already firmly established itself on the local musical scene. The choir, which numbers around 120 members, offers the chance to sing popular tuneful music to singers of all ages and abilities.
Under the expert guidance of its Musical Director, Dr Guy Bunce NES meets at 7.30 on Monday evenings from September through to July at The Easter Centre, St John's Church, Manor Farm Road, Egham TW20 9HR
There are no auditions or other pre-requisites just a wish to make music and have fun in doing so.
Guy takes into account the very mixed capabilities of his singers and there are rehearsal tracks available on-line to those struggling with the notes – those funny dots and squiggles that no normal person understands, but which seem to make sense to musicians!
The three aims of the choir are to make tuneful music; have fun; and raise a bit of money for charities.
The music is definitely tuneful and includes songs from the shows, spirituals, folk songs, arrangements of modern pop songs as well as some light classics. Our accompanist is Jonny Lane, a superb young pianist who graduated from Royal Holloway University and since then has completed numerous solo performances, cruise ship contracts and accompanies several other ensembles.
Fun is certainly had, not only with the smiling faces at rehearsals but also in the social gatherings which have included quiz nights, BBQ and Hog Roasts, theatre trips, private cinema screenings, Christmas dinners and regular informal pub gatherings. The choir has also organised several tours to destinations such Canterbury, Exeter and Leeds. NES has supported local causes include hospices, epilepsy and handicapped charities and support for the needy. Local Charities have benefited from the choir's efforts with over £38,000 having been donated to such good causes.
